Burnley in the 1930's
Original artwork, painted in 2024.
61cm x 51cm. Acrylic on Canvas.
This type of monochrome artwork is a new departure for Ross, as he loves to work in colour. Ross was born in the late 1930's in the nearby town of Blackburn, so is very familiar with the scene.
The mills pouring smoke from tall chimneys. Blackened buildings with a constant smell of coal dust clinging in the mostly damp air. Cobbled streets, millstone grit paving slabs and stone buildings originally of a sandstone colour. The ever-present Leeds and Liverpool Canal (The Cut!), which was the main artery of transportation during the Industrial Revolution. Not forgetting the trams and the tram lines waiting to unseat the incautious cyclist who crossed the tracks at an inappropriate angle!
Ross used liner pens of various thickness to draw the background scene on canvas board. Acrylic paint was then used to create the shading effect.
After controlling the urge to use colour, Ross say's he could not resist adding his signature in colour as a final flourish!
