About this Artwork
Daisyfield Mill, built in 1871 by Joseph Appleby & Sons, was originally a steam-powered corn mill. Located on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, the five storey mill incorporated grain silo's, a boiler house and two hoist towers. Grinding stones were replaced by roller mills in the late 1800s.
At its peak in 1889, Daisyfield Mill produced 3,000 sacks of flower a week. It remained operational until 1968. It has now been repurposed into office space.
Ross says he recalls being fascinated by the mills lining the Leeds and Liverpool canal in his youth. In this artwork he tries to capture the mechanical aspect of the subject matter, with rigid lines and the raw colour of the Accrington brick used for construction of many buildings in the locality.
