About the Artwork
The Italianate style 72 feet tall Market Clock Tower on King William Street was a prized Blackburn landmark until it was demolished on the 30th December 1964 on the orders of the Borough Council.
Ross felt the loss at the time as he had a personal involvement. He was part of the Architectural Team at BDP, a well-known firm of Architectural Consultants, charged with the design of the New Blackburn Shopping Centre. Ross proposed that the Market Clock Tower should be included as part of the new Centre. Sadly, the Council's decision to demolish prevailed.
Ross say's that this challenging artwork, drawn and painted in his unique style, brought back a host of memories of regularly visiting the old market with his mother in his post-war childhood years.
