About this Artwork
Avoca Town is a small settlement on the Avoca River which flows into the Irish Sea at Arklow. The highly scenic valley is known for it's copper mining and handweaving at Avoca Handweavers. The valley has also been celebrated by Thomas Moore in the song "The Meeting of the Waters" and in more recent times as the site of an expanding kite population of birds.
Ross says that he clearly remembers the day he walked around the village and took photographs which form the basis of this artwork. The late Autumn day was cold, bright and sunny, with a warm light flooding the multicoloured leaves, were ready to fall. The pointillist treatment of the painting wasn't planned! Ross say's that it "just developed" as he applied paint and, "seemed an appropriate way to capture the light and tranquility of the scene"!
