About this Artwork
The Caponier at Shannonbridge Fort, is a type of fortification structure designed to protect the fort's walls and provide a defensive position. Shannonbridge Fort, built in 1810, was strategically located to defend against invasion during the Napoleonic Wars. The fort itself is a remarkable example of military architecture and the caponier would have been an essential part of the defense system.
Ross say's that he visited the fort on a number of occasions and this particular work was painted shortly after one of these visits.
