About the Artwork
Ross recalls visiting St. Peter's and the Vatican Art Gallery in 1953, on a school trip at Easter time. Italy was still in the early stages of recovery, after the devastations of WW2 and, Rome had few visitors at that time. Ross says he enjoyed working on this piece, as it allowed him to fill St. Peter's Square with crowds of people, as well as colourfully distorting the Vatican buildings to add fun to the composition.!
